Performance monitor/real time monitoring tool

A huge argument in I.T. is "practical experience" vs "lot's of study of official course material" and the ups and downs of an engineer with tons of practical experience but no certs and an engineer with a few certs but not much experience.

I personally think both are extremely important and make for a well rounded engineer, but I can't count the number of engineers I have met who while very cluey have totally dismissed the need for certification and official vendor material which I feel is a mistake.

Am I getting to a point here? Yes I am. Today I wanted to talk about a tool I would never have discovered or realised how incredibly useful it is had I not been pursuing my CCIE Voice, that tool is the Real time monitoring tool, I assume ofcourse we have all heard about this tool if you use CUCM on a daily basis. But what you might not know is how incredibly useful it actually is.

One of the things I love about CCME is that I can debug things so easily, quick debug commands, lots of nice show commands make it easy for me to tell what is going on in my system, for example, if i want to know about an active call on a phone:

show ephone register
ephone-4[3] Mac:001X.XXX.XXX TCP socket:[2] activeLine:1 whisperLine:0 REGISTERED in SCCP ver 17/12 max_streams=5
mediaActive:1 whisper_mediaActive:0 startMedia:1 offhook:1 ringing:0 reset:0 reset_sent:0 paging 0 debug:0 caps:8 privacy:1
IP:192.168.33.16 37323 7941 keepalive 253 max_line 2 available_line 1
button 1: dn 30 number 1001 CH1 CONNECTED CH2 IDLE CH3 IDLE CH4 IDLE CH5 IDLE CH6 IDLE CH7 IDLE CH8 IDLE
blf speed dial 1:5007 test
Preferred Codec: g711ulaw
Active Call on DN 30 chan 1 :1001 192.168.33.16 29524 to 10.0.0.3 2000 via 192.168.33.16
G729 20 bytes vad
Tx Pkts 5451 bytes 174432 Rx Pkts 5429 bytes 173728 Lost 0
Jitter 2 Latency 0 callingDn -1 calledDn -1 (media path callID 1204 srcCallID 1205)

How do i pull up such relevant info on CUCM? Well Some info I am afraid you can't, but simply knowing that a call is indeed active can be done with the performance monitor.

Here's how:

First you need to go to the Application - Plugin page for CUCM, download and install the real time monitoring tool and login. Once you do click on "Performance" and select your server, you will be presented with so many things you can track! You can track things like attempted Extension Mobility logins, calls on a device, hits to hunt lists, just about everything!

I hope this helps someone out there
